RE: General Announcements - Peter T - 02-05-2019

Yes, was a waste of club members time last week. Pity, but we know 4 next time, just do our own thing. I want a list of members who r interested in slope soaring. If hardly no one is interested, then Im not going to chase up a site. Apparently we have used Carrs lookout b4, (yrs ago)but no one has that I know off 4 yrs. The way the MAAA is now, we either find a spot, use it, or dont bother. So yell out if ur interested!

RE: General Announcements - Celwin - 02-05-2019

I flew near Carrs Lookout when we last went there. I say near, as the cloud was too low for the main hill so we flew beside the owners house for a while until it lifted. By the time it lifted, the ESC in my eklectic Assassin had died (dammn eklectic-power) so I was out. The wind had picked up but the cloud was still there when Martin flew at the top with a Radian (he was the only one brave enough). At one moment, it disappeared into low cloud, down wind and at an unusual angle as he tried to maintain control. Landed up the paddock because of the turbulence. There are towers there now and some trees which are in the way from memory, so the site could be difficult depending on the wind direction now. It's a bit of a gamble driving there not knowing what the weather is going to be like.
It's not hard to have the area recognised by the MAAQ/MAAA/CASA. I've sent in the information (to Greg to send to the MAAQ Secretary) for out the back of our house and the Yangan Cricket Field.

So... I'm interested in Slope Soaring, but I'm not a very reliable member if travelling is involved.

Yeah, thats the problem as I c it, the travelling, and not knowing the weather b4 hand. Is there any closer places that could be used?

Catherine Cazaly, Marcel, the Warwick Seventh Day Adventist Church and their supporters have done a wonderful thing for the community. Too often people in places like ours think the services they are providing are needed eleswhere like the big cities. They would be wrong. good luck and continued success to them and their venture.

RE: General Announcements - KENNYGLIDE - 12-05-2019

Just browsing ...I understand the Scanner racing has been going on for some time but I cannot find a single video of it ..can someone please post one if they find it please.

RE: General Announcements - Celwin - 12-05-2019

I've had a look before too Kennyglide. I was interested to see how the event was run, such as starting and lap-counting, timing etc. but found very little. I think i found one at some stage, but you couldn't see anything that helped, as there wasn't any zoom and I think it was two scanners just zooming around. No pylons or other planes in view. Scanners have been in Australia for 50 years, but only raced for the last 5 years I think. It isn't a recognised class as far as pylon racing goes, so it is really in its infancy at this stage.

Maybe Kennyglide could be the first of us to make a fortune on YouTube by making a decent video!

I looked for large scale racing in Australia while I was at it (closest to the style of racing we will be doing) and again found very little quality footage.

Some American videos only Ken worth watching. If this video works it shows the same classes as flown in Australia. Beginner classes Q500 and a new electric class. Most favoured racer for beginners is Quicky 500 or Viper. Quicky 500 plans on Outerzone. Scanner started here by one club seems strongest in Victoria started at Ballarat or Bendigo. Cant see it growing as there are about 5 classes nationally and internationally recognised and i cant be sure but im pretty certain the Quicky 500 is a darn sight cheaper to build than a scanner.

Should have mentioned to avoid good natured accusation os bias. The scanner probably comes under Australian QMARA rules in FA3R class. Allows for introduction of class racing to suit local areas. QMARA. (Queensland Model Aero Racers Association)
